Bang on at The Normans

After the dizzying success of our 2019 wedding season, The Normans team went into bear-like hibernation for the first half of January.

You’ll be pleased to know we’re back. Back with a bear-like vengeance. Wide awake and hungry for berries, unwitting hikers and, most of all: weddings. Hosting weddings. Writing about weddings. All things weddings.

But enough of these tenuous and, quite frankly, ridiculous bear analogies, and on to more important matters: namely, starting 2020 with a bang. Not just the bang of celebratory fireworks, but a bangin’ blog post recalling Amy & Thomas’s wedding here at The Normans at the tail end of 2019 (remember the twenteens?).

You’d be forgiven thinking that the above image (captured by man-of-many-talents Joe Stenson) was from New Year’s Eve. Well, it’s not. It’s from Bonfire Night. Sorry to deceive, but it takes wedding photographers a month or so to sift through and edit the thousands of snaps they take on a night, so we figured November 5, and all the fireworks that come with it, was the perfect place to start our blogging season.

Despite November not being the first month on everyone’s list when it comes to booking a wedding date, this particular November day encapsulated the joys of British Autumn - and, we’re pleased to report, the venue did look rather gorgeous, despite the rain making a brief cameo mid-afternoon.

Special shout out for Amy & Thomas’s beautiful bespoke signage, which helped guests find their way to venue (take that, Google Maps!) and, indeed, find their way around the venue. Functional and pretty. Well done.

The Normans Ceremony Barn, pictured below awaiting its guests, glowed courtesy of its iconic cascading fairy lights, which in turn were complemented by the fantastic floral arrangements of Jade’s Secret Garden.

“I’m quite particular and I knew I wanted to keep the decor quite minimal - the venue is so stunning as it is, and I didn’t want to take away from that by having over-the-top decorations,” says Amy. “Although it was a winter wedding, I loved the colours blush pink and grey. I wanted more greenery in my flowers, punctuated with the occasional rose. My florist Jade did this so beautifully.”

All was quiet on the morning of the wedding, but The Normans Cottage was a hive of excited hubbub - chattering, the pop of champagne corks, and the roar of hairdryers.

Amy and her bridesmaids made the most of the (relatively) new dressing room to ready themselves for the Big Day, helped along the way by makeup artist Sarah Plews.

“Sarah is an eyebrow and makeup specialist who I have been using for a number of years,” says bride Amy. “There was never going to be anyone else when it came to my wedding makeup - she is amazing at what she does and each time she does it, it gets better and better!”

Bed-hair, bobs and bowl-cuts, meanwhile, were dealt with by hairstylist Hannah Taylor.

“I had been looking for a hairstylist for a while and no one had really caught my eye until I stumbled across Hannah’s Instagram page,” recalls Amy. “I messaged her straight away and, luckily, she was available. I wanted something simple but with texture, and Hannah knew exactly what I wanted. She created the most simple but beautiful up do for my day.”

It should be noted that none of the bridesmaids were sporting bowl-cuts. That’s just us being silly.

But the best was yet to come: the moment Amy donned her dress for the first time.

“My beautiful dress was by Enzoani and I purchased it from the Harrogate Wedding Lounge,” explains Amy. “Harrogate Wedding Lounge was the third wedding dress store I visited, and this was the first dress I tried on there.”

“By visiting the previous stores I knew I was looking for a more fitted silhouette,” continues Amy. “[My dress] looked quite simple on the hanger, [but] the detail on it was incredible, and I couldn’t believe how stunning it was. I added the detachable off-the-shoulder sleeves, which the seamstress matched beautifully to the lace detail on my dress. I also added a delicate thin belt, which was sewn onto my dress. I was so glad I could add these finishing touches - I couldn’t of been happier with my dress.”

And here’s Amy, looking stunning in Enzoani, flanked by her bridesmaids, all looking stunning in soft-grey dresses from Oasis.

“When I saw the dresses I immediately fell in love with them,” says Amy. “I had been looking for a soft grey colour but I had been really struggling finding anything I liked in this shade. The dresses were exactly what I was looking for in terms of colour and style. Luckily the bridesmaids loved them too!”  

Meanwhile, man-of-the-moment Thomas, was inside the venue, welcoming guests with the help of his Dad. Thomas is decked in a snappy three-piece-suit by Marc Darcy.

“I’m a bit out there with my dress sense,” says Tom. “ So, I felt that I needed to stand out from my groomsmen as our original plan was to be all in the same suit. After looking at all the usual suit brands, I stumbled by chance on this suit online and knew it was the one for me.”

Guests were seated, and the scene was set, but grey clouds and rain decided to crash the wedding, just before the ceremony. Happily, The Normans Cottage is located a stone’s throw from the Ceremony Barn, so bride, bridesmaids and the brother of the bride (who was giving the Amy away) didn’t have far to go. This said, the male contingent of the party didn’t manage to master use of the umbrellas quite as well as the ladies…

Soon enough, Amy, arm in arm with her brother, was making her way down the aisle to meet her groom.

Vows were made, rings exchanged, the register signed, and Amy and Thomas walked back up the aisle as man and wife.

The rule at The Normans is that guests have a drink in their hand within 0.7 seconds of the ceremony finishing (or thereabouts). The good people of Hog & Apple were on hand to oblige, armed with bubbly…

… and delectable canapes.

With the weather still misbehaving outside, guests took refuge in the cosy Cow Stalls…

… which were adorned with personalised Polaroid-style bunting - simple, yet so effective.

The soundtrack for the drinks reception was provided by the wonderful Daisy Kate.

And it was great to see bride Amy relax with her guests, glass in hand, as well as pay some special attention to her pooch who made a guest appearance for the drinks reception.

As guests made merry in the Cow Stalls, Team Hog (& Apple) were bust titivating the Grain Shed, ready for guests to take their seats for the wedding breakfast.

Again, we love the understated. personalised decorative items and floral displays adorning tables in the Grain Shed.

“I opted for gold decorative items as I felt this would work beautifully with greenery,” explains Amy. “We had garlands scattered along the long rustic banquets tables, along with gold candlestick holders and glass tea lights with a gold rim.”

Hog & Apple played their part, by placing their iconic Yorkshire sharing boards on tables before guests took their seats. A feast for the eyes and, indeed, the stomach.

Bride and groom were announced in…

… and eating was followed by speaking…

… specifically the speeches, which suitably entertained guests… and embarrassed the groom.

And, as is customary at any good wedding a (slightly) drunk bride and groom were handed a sharp knife in order to hack apart a rather lovely cake (this cake in particular was made by Leisa of Cakes by Leisa fame).

The DIY bespoke photo booth went down well…

… and distracted guests long enough bride and groom could head out into the dark, cold, November night to have their photo taken in a drafty shed. The results, you’ll agree, are rather lovely.

But Amy and Thomas couldn’t admire the agricultural for long - they were soon called back to the Grain Shed for the first dance…

… and their guests needed little invitation to mob bride and groom soon after.

The fireworks to celebrate this red-hot Bonfire Night wedding were a total surprise for Amy and Thomas’s guests and a sparkling way in which to conclude the most wonderful of weddings. A big thank you to Ardent Fireworks for the stunning display!

(A note from the Normans to any couples wanting fireworks for their Big Day - we only really allow them on Bonfire Night and New Year’s Eve. However, we always try to be as accommodating as possible, so if you have any pyrotechnic questions, just shoot us an email!)

Autumn A-Game at The Normans

For those who’ve had their fill of mince pies, garish knitwear, and socialising at office Christmas parties, take a break from festive forced fun and join us as we look back at Vicky and Alex’s autumn wedding here at The Normans.

October is an oft overlooked month to tie the knot, but, luckily, it happens to be Vicky and Alex’s favourite time of year.

“We chose to get married in autumn, as it is our favourite season,” explains bride Vicky. “We love going for autumnal walks, watching the colours of the trees change, and also having cosy evenings in as the nights draw in.”

But before we get too carried away with the couple’s stunning seasonal decor, let’s meet the lady of the moment, pictured below getting ready in The Normans Cottage.

Vicky’s choice of dress for her Big Day was a beautiful Blue by Enzoani bridal gown from The Bridal Collection, Harrogate.

“The whole team [at The Bridal Collection] were brilliant at giving a friendly and personalised service,” says Vicky. “The shop itself has been decorated beautifully and is in a perfect position overlooking the Stray in Harrogate. It was such a lovely experience going for each fitting.”

The result, you’ll agree, is stunning.

“I originally wanted a dress with lace sleeves, but ended up really liking a strapless dress with a sweetheart neckline. When The Bridal Collection told me that they could make up some removable sleeves out of the same lace used on the dress, I was sold! This gave me two different looks - I wore the sleeves for a more formal look during the ceremony and took them off for the party afterwards.”

The bridesmaids’ dresses were all individually bought to suit the girls’ individual styles and personalities.

“We went for dresses in the same colour which suited everyone, explained Vicky. “A merlot colour in different styles, bought from Coast, BCBG Max Azria and JJ’s House.”

To ensure bridesmaids and Alex’s groomslady kept warm on a chilly autumn day, Vicky commissioned seamstress Val Hoyle to make faux fur shawls using materials found in a fabric shop on London’s Goldhawk Road.

”The beautiful floral arrangements were by Sheryl Popplewell from Fulford Flowers,” says Vicky. “Sheryl is unbelievably talented and her flowers are just out of this world - we had never seen anything like them!”

“Sheryl completely understood our vision right away and did an amazing job of creating the autumnal scene that we had imagined. The floral arrangements included black baccarat roses, orange orchids, blue thistles, viburnum berries, eucalyptus and various other foliage. The colours of the flowers were set alight by all the twinkling fairy lights around The Normans.” 

Not ones for convention, Vicky and Alex opted for a ‘first look’ walk down the aisle before guests were seated for the ceremony.

We’ll admit: we weren’t sure how the ‘first look’ would work, but we soon realised it afforded bride and groom an intimate moment together before the day began - and made for some great photos. Furthermore, Vicky and Alex could spend more time with their friends and family during the drinks reception.

Meanwhile, guests were given a taste of the autumnal theme that permeated the venue, thanks to some beautifully designed signage at the gate…

… and the order-of-the-day painted onto a pallet and embellished with rust-red leaves…

Hidden Compass String Quartet from London provided the soundtrack for the ceremony, while order of ceremony and confetti awaited guests on each seat.

Once guests were seated, they were soon standing again: for the entrance of the bride (again). Needless to say, stunning Vicky didn’t put a foot wrong!

As a passionate feminist, Vicky chose not to be ‘given away’, as such, but to to walk herself down the aisle: “Whilst I love my dad very much, it was important to me to walk myself down the aisle, and my feminist dad was completely on board with that!”

(Traditionalists need not fret too much: Vicky’s dad still did the father-of-the-bride speech!)

Vicky may have made a solo journey down the aisle, but she returned with a man in hand.

Alex, in case you were wondering, is wearing a tailored blue suit with a tweed waistcoat from Dapper in Surbiton, London.

The Hog & Apple were at it again with their excellent edibles.

“The canapés went down a treat with our guests,” recalls Vicky. “A lot of our friends have turned vegetarian in the last year, so for ease we had all-vegetarian canapés. The mini pie and pint was a particular standout.”

Once drinks had been quaffed and canapés consumed, the Grain Shed doors were opened and guests found their places for the wedding breakfast with the help of this beautiful seating plan.

“We are keen travellers and have visited over 30 countries together in the last 10 years,” says Vicky. “So for our table seating plan we used a map of the world and luggage tags, and named the tables as different countries we have visited.”

We were pleased to see the autumn trees make another appearance in the Grain Shed - relocated by the team at Fulford Flowers to frame the top table.

Meanwhile, candelabras were imbued with autumnal colours - merlot, burnt orange, gold, green and navy blue - and contrasted wonderfully against the creams and whites and fairylights in the Grain Shed.

Hog & Apple’s classic Yorkshire sharing board - a medley of fine meat, pate, and fresh bread finished off with delectable handmade chutneys - was placed on each table before guests took their seats.

“For the meal we wanted informal, warming foods, the kind of comfort food that you want to eat on a chilly autumn day,” says Vicky. “We went with Yorkshire sharing boards for starters; pulled pork, pork belly [or pulled jackfruit for vegetarians] and warm autumnal salads for mains. For dessert, it was sticky toffee pudding, followed by espresso martinis for the all-important pre-dancing caffeine hit!”

Vicky and Alex weren’t too bothered about the cutting of the cake, so instead opted for Hog & Apple’s chocolate woodland board, which featured rocky road chocolate log, brownie pine cones, chocolate autumn leaves, chocolate soil, and marshmallow mushrooms.

“It was really striking and looked and tasted amazing,” enthuses Vicky. “Some of our friends took some of the leftovers with them at the end of the night, but we were told that they were promptly scoffed and did not even last the journey home!”

Food was followed by some quite touching speeches…

… and then Vicky and Alex’s first dance as a married couple.

Vicky and Alex’s guests were lured onto the dance floor by the fantastic Mini Big Band, here at The Normans for the second time.

“The Mini Big Band completely made our wedding evening,” says Vicky. “As we and many of our guests are musicians, having great music on our wedding day was a priority. The Mini Big Band and singer Paul really wowed our guests, who were very impressed with their standard of musicianship and charisma. We think they’re an absolute must!” 

“The Normans is a stunning venue and we really valued the fact that we could decorate it and make it our own for the day (with access to the venue the day before). It made it seem so much more personal to us. We didn’t feel like other venues could offer anywhere near as much flexibility and personalisation as The Normans.”

The Colour of Love at The Normans

Feeling smothered by the soggy, grey blanket that is the month of November, we retreat once more to our happy place. Our happy place, in this instance, is a sunshine-filled day in July - the day Kat and Garylee brought their bright and beautiful wedding to The Normans.

We begin this nostalgic amble down memory lane with one half of our wonderful couple - bride Kat.

Kat opted to get ready at her nearby family home. Here she is in her jaw-dropping ‘Cooper’ dress by Rime Arodaky, procured from The Mews Bridal in Notting Hill, London.

“I was originally drawn to another of the boutique’s designers, who I’d found on Pinterest but went in with an open mind,” recalls Kat. “The staff were very attentive - far from pushy - and I instantly felt comfortable. I didn’t initially shortlist the ‘Cooper’ dress, but when they suggested I try it, I thought why not?! As soon as I put it on, it immediately felt right. I’d tried a number of beautiful dresses but this one kept coming back to me. I love its understated, elegant shape.”

We couldn’t agree more, Kat. 

Kat’s good friend Rebecca Parker took charge of make-up.

“Her attention to detail is spot on,” says Kat. “She managed to create the natural look I wanted, whilst adding a touch of something special.”

Meanwhile, Garylee, the southern half of our power couple, suited up in The Normans Cottage.

This gregarious groom was decked out in a deep-blue made-to-measure suit from the Moss Bros Tailor Me service.

“The colour looked vibrant in the pictures and went really well with the coral knitted ties, pocket squares and cuff links, which I was always planning to get,” explains Kat. “The groomsmen’s suits were also from Moss Bros and part of their current range.”

Bright, bold colours were a running theme throughout the day, imbuing everything from floral details to the bridesmaids’ dresses - each of Kat’s special ladies donned a vibrant primary colour with a bouquet to match.

“All the Bridesmaid’s dresses were from Whistles,” says Kat. “My sister found them online and I liked the way their soft gathered trims, wrap-over and backless details complemented the features of my dress. I was also chuffed that I could get each of them in a different colour, which matched our colour scheme. So many Bridesmaid’s dresses are the same, so to have a common theme and a point of difference was great!”

There was delicious detail at every turn. Take this gorgeous moon arch, for instance, which stood at the top of the aisle, in front of cascading fairy lights.

The moon arch (as with all the day’s floral displays) was the handiwork of Normans regular Clock Dandelion (more on flowers, later).

And, we’ll take this opportunity to laud the personalised stationery designed by Kat.

“Gary and I are big music fans and have a mutual love of ‘80s and ‘90s Synth, Indie, and Britpop. It’s the kind of stuff we grew up with and we have a particular love of The Stone Roses. I used their (Jackson Pollock) album covers as a starting point for inspiration - our colour palette arose from these album covers, as did our take on their paint splatters by using spray painted ‘blobs’ with drips running down,” explains Kat.

“I designed the ‘spray’ pattern, which featured on the invitations, bunting, cake, favours, place name badges… I also used Gary’s last name to create a ‘Hudson Records Inc’ logo, which featured pretty heavily.”

But even the natty stationery didn’t distract when Kat rocked the aisle…

The ceremony was sealed with a kiss, captured by the marvellous Marni V Photography (the lady responsible for all these fantastic photos!)

Once the ceremony was done, celebrations spilled outside into The Normans Courtyard…

… though some guests preferred the cosy confines of The Cow Stalls…

… where yet more floral artistry could be found. We adored Kat’s colour scheme and the assorted floral designs curated by Clock Dandelion.

Kat and Garylee soon escaped their friends, fans and followers. First stop: a photo-op alongside their awesome wedding transport: a classic VW Camper and Herbie, no less.

Talk about arriving in style…

And then onto the farm sheds, for a dance. As you do.

Happily, the couple survived the passing farm traffic and came away with some quite lovely photos.

Before long, it was time for Kat and Garylee to return to the venue…

… where Hog & Apple’s Doug announced the wedding breakfast and promptly flung open the Grain Shed doors…

… to release the balloons. Cue dreamlike imagery of hundreds of brightly coloured balloons drifting away into the summer sky.

Once the balloons had dispersed, guests were greeted by this stunning floral display in the entrance of The Grain Shed dining area.

“I was blown away by Jo from Clock Dandelion,” exudes Kat. “We loved that she sources flowers seasonally. The floral feature in the entrance to the grain shed was stunning; and we also asked Jo to create some ‘natural’ table runners from green foliage and a ‘Moon Ring’, which looked amazing in the ceremony barn and later behind the cake.”

Kat and Garylee’s seating plan took the form of ‘tickets’ to see the ‘band’ that each table took its name from.

“We hoped the alphabetical layout would make it easier for guests to find their names,” says Kat, who was thrilled to see that most guests were wearing their name badges (place names) throughout the evening.

Yet more inflatable fun awaited guests in The Grain Shed - this time, striking gold and polka dot balloons.

And our music-loving couple didn’t miss the opportunity to name the tables after their favourite bands. Our favourite? York’s finest musical export, Shed 7.

“The Hog & Apple blew us away with their food and service,” says Kat. “We loved their unconventional style and they managed to deliver quality on a grand scale. We chose their ‘Bacon and Egg’ Crispy Ham Hock to start, which came with various chutneys and dressings and a ’64 degree egg’ that was cracked over the ham hock to serve. It was delicious as well as unique. The main course ‘chicken and chorizo supreme’ came with rosti, charred hispi cabbage, carrot and paprika puree, and a pea-shoot dressing. The flavours were absolutely cracking and all the staff went out of their way to make sure our requests were delivered from the off!”

But before guests tucked in, the bride and groom made their entrance to rapturous applause. We love Marni’s shot of Garylee taking a moment before being announced.

And here they are, in all their glory…

And here’s the moon arch, again - relocated by florist Jo Drake with the help of The Normans team. A great way to maximise the impact of such a stunning feature. And the cake? This beauty was the handiwork of Beth from Torte Cakes.

As night fell, the party kicked off in earnest.

And, with the Slinky Band in place, Kat and Garylee began the evening’s events with the first dance.

Well-oiled guests were quick to join bride and groom, and all and sundry saw through the night by way of colourful interpretive (drunk) dance routines.

A splendid party, befitting of a cracking couple.

“We wanted a less traditional, more relaxed venue to match our character - The Normans is beautiful and the staff are wonderful. Also, the venue’s links with great suppliers meant that everything ran like clockwork. The whole day was fantastic!”

Sunshine on a rainy day at The Normans

We spend a lot of time referencing the weather in this blog. That’s because: 1) We’re English, so that’s what we do, and 2) The weather seems to be an important ingredient to a wedding day.

But, as far as point 2) is concerned: we’re not so sure anymore. Come rain or shine, brides, grooms and their guests still have an amazing time at The Normans.

Just take The Normans for example. No, not us, these two, pictured below - Joanna and Andrew, who became Mr & Mrs Norman at The Normans on a blustery July day earlier this year. And while the weather misbehaved, it didn’t get in the way of what turned out to be a most spectacular wedding.

Before Joanna became Mrs Norman, she and her bridesmaids spent the wedding morning getting ready in The Normans Cottage with the assistance of Joanna’s longtime hairdresser, Kerri from Synergy in Harrogate.

“It was lovely to have someone I already knew quite well there on the morning!” says Joanna. “Kerri had an extra pair of hands from the salon - Emily - to help her, and Sam from the salon also did our make up.”

Once hair was styled and make-up perfected, attention turned towards the dresses. Joanna had picked a stunning Essense of Australia design from Ava Rose Hamilton boutique in Silsden and Colne, Yorkshire. The bridesmaids’ Dessy dresses in stunning sea grass, are from Scarlet Poppy in Leeds.

“I’m quite particular,” admits Joanna. “I tried on a lot of dresses in other shops before this one, and even this dress was customised by adding more lace on the illusion neckline! I loved the different layers of lace - particularly the illusion neckline and the detailing on the back.”

“Once I’d put it on I could actually imagine wearing it on the day, so that was a big selling point! I went initially with my sister-in-law, Alex, then went back with my mum and granny to try it on again - we decided it was the right one and Granny very kindly paid for it. The girls at Ava Rose Hamilton were lovely too, with no pressure at all to make a decision until I was sure it was the right one!”

Flowers played a huge part in Joanna and Andrew’s day - the bride’s gorgeous bouquet was created by the wonderful Wendy at Paperwhite Flowers.

But before we get too carried away with our beautiful bride, her bouquet and gorgeous gown, a shout out to the other person of interest: the groom. And, if we don’t say so ourselves, what a lovely fellow he is.

Here’s Andrew, at home, dressed in a well-cut suit courtesy of the ever-reliable Moss Bros. His lapel is adorned with a rose buttonhole - handiwork of Paperwhite, once again.

From one (Andrew) Norman to another: The Normans Ceremony Barn.

“The Ceremony Barn has such a beautiful atmosphere,” says Joanna. “The fairy lights were the main attraction so we decided to just have the floral displays on the barrels at the front, and pew ends on each of the front rows.”

The scene was set for the ceremony, which began as Jo walked down the aisle, arm in arm with proud Dad…

Jo and Andrew became Mr & Mrs Norman - a first for The Normans (wedding venue), and they walked back down the aisle just in time for…

… the rain to stop long enough to step outside into the Courtyard for the drinks reception. (Check out the silver birch, brought in especially for the day, placed either side of the Ceremony Barn doors.)

Hog & Apple’s super staff lay in wait - black-clad culinary ninja warriors, wielding cold champagne and canapés.

“Doug from the Hog & Apple was my saviour,” reminisces Joanna. “He brought me my own platter of canapés when we got back from taking some photos and I realised I was starving!”

Canapés included succulent roast beef served in mini Yorkshire puddings and goat-cheese mousse on olive-drop scones.

The weather even held out long enough for a group photo outside…

… and when the wind and rain returned, they only served to make the photos from the day all the more dramatic.

Once photos had been snapped, canapes had been consumed and champagne quaffed, the Grain Shed doors were flung open and guests lured inside.

This quite stunning table plan, framed with yet more English roses, greeted guests. (The floral frame was re-used later as a frame for a DIY photobooth. Bravo, Paperwhite!)

Joanna and Andrew made good use of The Normans’ rustic banqueting tables - the two outer rows featured leaf-strewn gantries, while the inner two rows of tables were punctuated with olive trees.

“We decided to have two different table designs,” explains Joanna. “One style had the little olive trees at the joins between the banqueting tables and the other used the gantries for lots of trailing foliage.”

“Every table also had a jar of seasonal flowers, each a little different to the next, with enough room for the sharing platters!” continues Joanna. “We wanted to ensure that people would be able to see those opposite them to make sure that conversation flowed!”

“The wedding favours were boxes filled with traditional Cypriot wedding favours called loukoumia, made by Andrew’s mum and her two sisters, who also hand-tied each box,” says Joanna. “There was also a bag of five sugared almonds and a packet of sweet pea seeds (I grow some every year). I also made and bottled a very large volume of elderflower cordial, using elderflowers we picked from the banks of the Nidd, about five minutes from our house. All of our stationery was made by local stationer Sally, at Goldfinch Design, and she designed and printed the little labels on the bottles of cordial.”

The food on the day was of particular importance to the couple - especially since Andrew grew up surrounded by fabulous Greek Cypriot cooks!

“One of the things we wanted to do was to have sharing platters; it gets people talking to each other and it means people can take exactly what they want,” says Joanna. “We had so many people telling us the food was the best they’d ever had at a wedding. All of the meat for the main was cooked to perfection, it’s hard to pick a favourite, and the salads were delicious. I think the pudding might have been the standout though.”

The stunning cake was the handiwork of Miss Friday, aka Lois Tanumi, and we loved how the gift table was packed with presents, extra wedding favours and the Polaroid camera gift book. Classic.

Speeches were heartfelt and hilarious to equal measure…

… and once guests were done toasting their bride and groom, they retreated to the sparkling Courtyard for fresh air and more drinks.

Meanwhile, Joanna and Andrew took this opportunity for some well-deserved downtime; stealing a kiss by the lavender in the Courtyard…

… and admiring the heavy machinery parked in the farm sheds across the road.

Back in the Cow Stalls, Paperwhite had worked wonders; filling troughs with delphiniums, larkspur, Ammi majus, Nigella and spray roses amongst others.

And the floral border for the table plan was re-positioned, making a fabulous photo frame.

Crowds were called back to the Grain Shed for the first dance…

… before the fantastic Rolling Keys kicked off the evening with a sensational set.

Judging from the photos, guests clearly approved. A wonderful way to finish a wonderful day.

“I grew up very much in the countryside so I wanted a venue that made me feel at home. Andrew’s English grandparents live in a farmhouse in Leicester that was built in 1691 and has been in the family for over 150 years, and I think the Normans reminded us a bit of the farm (not just because of the surname connection!). The whole day was perfect and we can’t thank Oliver, Sharon and Doug from H&A enough for making it stress-free and the best day of our lives.”

Summer sensations Rachel and Sean at The Normans

Autumn, thus far, has been… ‘soggy’ at best, which is why we’re remedying your seasonal affective disorder with a healthy dose of blog. In other words: a spoonful of Rachel and Sean’s sensational summer wedding, here at The Normans.

Of course, anyone with a memory marginally better than a geriatric goldfish, will recall that summer wasn’t particularly generous in the sunshine stakes. But then, anyone lucky enough to have met the bride and groom will testify that this couple bring the sunshine with them.

Case in point: the lovely Rachel (below) readying herself with the assistance of her longtime hairdresser Mari Price, and make-up artist Kelly aka Bee Beauty.

“I travel back to Derbyshire every time I need a haircut,” says Rachel. “Before I was even engaged, Mari and I would talk about how I would have my hair on my wedding day. I've always known Mari would do my wedding hair. Her best friend Kelly is an incredibly talented make-up artist after a trial with my bridesmaids we decided we 100% we wanted Kelly to do our makeup for the day.”

Meanwhile, Rachel’s dress was the work of Catherine Parry, bought from Flutterby Bridal Boutique in New Rossington, Doncaster.

“I actually already had my wedding dress… then I saw this one as I was leaving Flutterby Bridal Boutique after going to choose my bridesmaids dresses. It was hanging up and I saw it, literally, as we were leaving. I begged the owner to let me try it on as we had already used up our time slot. Luckily the next bride hadn't arrived yet so I had time to quickly try it. I instantly fell in love with it and my bridesmaids faces when I stepped out of the changing room confirmed that it was the one.”

Rachel’s bridesmaids, meanwhile, wore Hayley Paige Occasions from Flutterby Bridal Boutique - each of the girls rocking their own chosen style.

“We went to Flutterby specifically to see these dresses as I had fallen in love with them online,” recalls Rachel. “It was important to us that our bridesmaids could choose their own dresses, in a shape and fit they felt comfortable in.”

Rachel’s bouquet was put together by Kate Mell, who captured the couple’s simple yet stylish approach to their wedding day with cloud-like roses, fragrant sprigs of rosemary and gypsophila.

And let’s not forget groom Sean, who scrubbed up rather splendidly. Here he is, wearing a Journal Standard suit, a shirt by Beam, and tie by Drakes - all of which he purchased from Canopy, in Derby.

“Sean has shopped in Canopy for many years,” explains Rachel. “He’s good friends with the owner, James. When we got engaged James said he would help Sean find the perfect suit when the time came.”

Sean’s shoes are Supreme x Clarks Originals Wallabees.

The groomsmen were left to their own devices when it came to choosing their outfits for the day. And why not? These gents can dress.

And so, with the weather on best behaviour, guests in high spirits, and music in the air, it was time to seat everybody for the ceremony…

Sean and his groomsmen were on hand to meet and greet guests, while The Dotted Crotchets provided the soundtrack.

Rachel, as you’d expect, owned the aisle…

The ceremony was as uplifting and emotional, as you’d imagine.

Readings were read…

… and confetti was violently hurled in the direction of the bride and groom.

Indeed, guests couldn’t quite contain themselves, and it didn’t take long for the Courtyard to be filled with jigs, japes…

… and Giant Jenga.

The emotion of competitive Connect 4 was all to much for some guests…

… while others added their own imaginative twist to the available garden games.

As the ribaldry and revelry escalated within, Rachel and Sean sneaked outside for photos in the sun.

They were joined by guest of honour, Nora, their beloved pooch…

… and when Rachel and Sean weren’t doting on Nora, they were lighting up every last corner of the farm with their own inimitable style - from The Normans famous* roller-shutter door…

… to the nearby Grain Shed. (We’re pretty sure the farm buildings don’t look this amazing on a day-to-day basis, so hats off to the couple, and a rousing round of applause to their photographer Samuel Docker.)

The afternoon sunshine coated the countryside in golden light - the perfect setting for a stroll…

… until the couple got terribly lost.

(This, of course, is a poor attempt at humour: they weren’t lost! We love this styled shot of Rachel and Sean looking, well, a bit lost.)

Back inside, the Grain Shed doors were flung open and guests were lured inside with the promise of culinary delights provided by Hog & Apple.

“We decided straight away that we wouldn’t have a traditional wedding breakfast,” says Rachel. “So it was important to us to find a venue and caterers that could support this idea.”

“We have a real soft spot for an Indian street food place in Leeds called Bundobust and in a casual conversation with Ged from H&A he mentioned he had been trying out some dishes inspired by Bundobust. That was it! I was sold! My only regret is that I didn't eat enough of these - they were incredible and received very high praise from our guests.”

“For our mains we wanted some of our favourite foods - foods you’d crave after a day in the sunshine celebrating… and drinking! We decided on burgers, fried chicken and hot dogs! H&A did not disappoint - vegans, veggies, coeliacs and meat-eaters all complimented the food!”

No wedding is complete without cake - or, indeed, donuts.

“Our cake was made by Once Across the Garden in York,” says Rachel. “I eat a vegan diet, as do many of our guests, so it was important to me that we had a cake that everyone at the wedding could enjoy! We went with non traditional flavours of Biscoff, Oreo and chocolate orange. We also had donuts from Doughnotts in Derby and gluten-free whoopie pies from Wildcraft in Leeds.

It would seem guests enjoyed the dough-based delights.

As the sun went down, the lights came up in The Normans Courtyard…

… and bride Rachel gracefully glided onto the dance floor…

… for the first dance.

Rachel and Sean’s guests were quick to invade the dance floor, with smooth moves, laughter…

… and, for some, heavy sobbing. (We actually think he’s asleep, but still…)

The Sarah & Joe show at The Normans

We’ve been a bit quiet on the ol’ blog front, lately. For this, we apologise. We blame the tsunami of fantastic summer weddings combined with our (other) full-time job of tending The Normans’ resident beasties (namely: nocturnal toddlers, senile pugs, and misbehaving border terrier pups).

But we’re back.

Back with a vengeance.

And we’re celebrating our return to blogging brilliance with Sarah and Joe’s most marvellous matrimony here at The Normans.

Last we heard, newlyweds Sarah and Joe were swapping the UK for LA. And what better way to say bye-bye to Brexit Britain than with a highly personalised and picture-perfect wedding day in deepest darkest Yorkshire? Setting the tone: stylish ‘order of the day’ signage to greet guests on arrival.

Believe it or not, but the British weather behaved on the day, allowing guests to grab a drink in the Courtyard, and watch on as small children edged precariously close to the water feature.

Meanwhile, our brilliant bride, Sarah, readied herself for the aisle in The Normans Cottage. Here hangs her elegant Charlotte Balbier gown, which she procured from boutique Lace & Co. Sarah’s hair was styled Rachel Miller, while make-up responsibilities were delegated to her most talented lil’ sis. Bravo!

However, Sarah was initially unsure about her chic Balbier number.

“Even when Shona - Joe's Dad's wife - pulled it out and begged me to try it on, I was reluctant,” explains Sarah. “I was at the very end of my appointment and pretty much planning my next, the lovely ladies at Lace & Co were even giving me suggestions of where else to visit. Thankfully I tried on my lovely dress, and… I just knew. I loved it!”

Meanwhile, outside, a smiling and slightly terrified-looking Joe was attended to by The Normans staff, who ensured he was suitably turned out to meet his bride.

Joe’s natty three-piece number is the handiwork of Whitfield & Ward, and his groomsmen followed suit (pun entirely intended) by hiring their wedding outfits from the same tailor. Buttonholes by Dottie’s Florist & Finery.

After many man-hugs, it was time for Joe to take his place at the end of the aisle…

… and await the entrance of his beautiful bride and her enthusiastic entourage. Bridesmaids were dressed in tops and skirts from the ever-reliable Asos and the adorable flower girl wore Monsoon.

Sarah looked stunning as she owned the aisle, walking arm in arm with dewy-eyed dad. The scene was set for stunning, heartfelt ceremony.

A special shout out to photographers Paul and Kelly for capturing these sublime shots of the ceremony.

And so, Miss McCall became Mrs Mirtaheri, and bride and groom stepped out into the sun for drinks followed bu the wedding breakfast. Guests were welcomed into The Grain Shed dining area by way of this utterly original table plan…

“By far, my favourite piece of decor was the seating plan!” recalls Sarah. “I knew I wanted to use a ladder shelf with flowers, but, last minute, I thought it would be a nice idea if the children in my class painted the plant pots… it made it so, so, so special! The children in my class are from Delius Special School and they are very special to me. I'll never forget this part of the wedding - ever!”

Joe and Sarah opted for circular tables covered in crisp white linen, punctuated with greenery. Caterers F4D wowed guests with Persian-themed cuisine - a nod to Joe’s family heritage.

Speeches were made, glasses were raised…

… and soon the evening revelries began. Entertainment provided by band Brother From Another…

… and many laughs were had in the Birdie Camper Van Photo Booth.

The evening ended with a packed dance floor - with bride Sarah leading the charge.

Oliver and that staff can not do enough for you, before, during and even after the big day. They are AMAZING and made our day so easy. I cannot not recommend The Normans enough. Devils for details at The Normans

No so long ago, we announced that summer was ‘threatening to make a comeback’. Since then we’ve had record temperatures and record rainfall.

Ah, merry England…

At least the weather behaved itself back in May for Katie and Rob’s beautiful wedding, which we’re revisiting for today’s blog… And, to clarify - the lovely couple were by no means devils, but their eye for detail when creating their Big Day was quite commendable…

On arrival, guests were greeted by blue skies and some well-placed signage guiding them into The Normans Courtyard…

… where yet more well-placed signage artfully conveyed the order of the day. We love the use of this old farm pallet. Informative and eye-catching. Bravo.

While guests mingled for pre-ceremony drinks (see above for obligatory shot of resident feline Toilet Cat strutting her stuff), bride-to-be Katie was readying herself in The Normans Cottage. Here she is being doted on by the lovely Emily and Stephanie of Luxe Hair & Makeup.

The result, as you can imagine, was quite stunning. Here’s Katie, dressed in a ‘Romance’ gown by Marylise & Rembo Styling.

“I am a Yorkshire girl at heart so always knew I would start my search for a dress ‘Up North’,” explains Katie. “I ended up finding ‘the one’ in The Bridal Collection, Harrogate. The gown I chose has a gorgeous long floaty skirt and a scalloped lace sleeveless bodice that fit me like a glove. I also fell for a long delicate veil that I absolutely loved wearing and ended up keeping on even as I was dancing the night away!”

Katie’s bridesmaids, meanwhile, were dressed in mid-blue Taurus by Veromia from NABBD (Not Another Boring Bridesmaid Dress!) in London. “The boutique has hundreds of different styles of dresses in every possible colour, which was perfect for us as we were struggling to find the right colours for our May wedding when we started looking around Christmas time,” says Katie. “The dresses looked stunning on all of my girls and worked perfectly with the colours in their spring bouquets.”

Aforementioned bouquets were the handiwork of our friend Kate Mell; here they are, modelled by Katie and her fab five bridesmaids.

Meanwhile, groom Rob loitered in The Normans Courtyard, showing off his tailored three-piece number from M&S. His classic look was finished off with the white rose of Yorkshire as a buttonhole. Quite right too.

Once Rob was buttonholed up and had assumed the position (at the end of the aisle), The Normans Team shepherded Katie and her bridesmaids to the Ceremony Barn…

Here, the father of the bride took over, and proudly walked his daughter down the aisle. And the rest, as they say, is history…

As is the tradition in these parts, the newly married couple were enthusiastically pelted with confetti as they walked back down the aisle…

… happily, their travails were rewarded by Hog & Apple, who lay in wait with some delectable canapes. On today’s menu: Korean fillet of beef in a lettuce wrap and Thai spring rolls, to name but a few.

The Normans Courtyard is the ideal place to scoff and quaff - and a rather nice setting for the obligatory group shot. Everyone say: “Coagulation of the milk protein casein!” (Or “cheese!”, if that’s easier.)

The drinks reception also affords couples the perfect opportunity to escape for quiet time and photos. We just love how photographers visiting The Normans are getting more and more creative with the backdrops they find around the farm. Hats off to Kate Gray, who was back at The Normans shooting these truly amazing portraits.

There was even the opportunity for the groomsmen and bridesmaids to get in on the action…

No corner of the farm was left unexplored - from the modern spaces…

… to some of the farm’s oldest, most scenic spots.

On the subject of photography, we have to make special mention of the couple’s DIY ‘photo booths’, imaginatively created by hanging ornate picture frames from the trusses in the Cow Stalls. This unique little area was made all the more special with bushy hops lining the mangers (Kate Mell’s handiwork, yet again) and personalised Polaroid-style bunting.

Guests were in for a treat when the Grain Shed doors were opened for the wedding breakfast…

… they were greeted by a stunning table plan, again, embellished with yet more hops; a table-full of wedding favours-cum-goodie bags…

… and little personal touches at every turn - from the guest book to the, erm, gnomes!

“Kate Mell created two stunning floral displays of hydrangeas and stocks for the end of the aisle, which filled the ceremony barn with a gorgeous scent,” reminisces Katie.

These displays were then moved by The Normans team into the Grain Shed, so Katie and Rob (and their guests!) could make the most out of them.

“We kept with the floral theme throughout,” continues Katie, “by decorating the long dining tables with rustic jam jars packed with white- and blush-coloured blooms.“

Hog & Apple duly served some beautiful-looking, great tasting food. Behold the below dishes: an antipasti sharing platter (the goat’s cheese stack) served on a raised board; Parmesan, rocket and green bean salad; chorizo mac and cheese; and an Eton Mess dessert.

“We were keen to bring everyone together and chose the long rustic dining tables and sharing dishes to do this – antipasti boards to start, followed by the most amazing pulled pork, Southern fried chicken and mac ‘n’ cheese for main. Hog and Apple were fantastic, both during the planning and on the day and so many of our guests have said how much they enjoyed our wedding breakfast,” says Katie.

Since the food and the decor were good enough to sing and dance about, it’s fitting that we fast-forward to the first dance, where Katie and Rob kicked off the evening by taking to the floor for the first time as a married couple.

Love in full bloom at The Normans

June may have been a washout, but summer’s threatening to make a comeback this month. To celebrate, we hark back to the happy day when a lady called Emily married a man called James, right here at The Normans.

Emily and James’s wedding epitomised summer chic and style, and featured a distinct floral theme throughout…

But before we get to the bride and groom, the music and the food, and all the other important details that are of interest to soon-to-be-wed couples, we begin this blog (like all good blogs) with a cat. Not just any cat, mind, but The Normans’ feline-in-chief: Toilet Cat (long story behind the name). Here she is, enjoying the sun in The Normans Courtyard, basking in the sunshine, waiting for an unsuspecting guest to drop a canape.

Speaking of guests: here they are, mingling and making merry in The Normans Courtyard (Toilet Cat out of shot). The welcome sign is one of the many nice personal touches that punctuated James and Emily’s big day.

And so, to Emily’s partners in crime: the bridesmaids. Here they are, below, approaching the venue, wedding ready. Emily let her girls pick their own dresses, and the result is fantastic: a mixture of styles from Issa at House of Fraser, Asos, Oasis (the high-street retailer, not the band), and Shona Joy. We love the deep blues, rich reds and dark greens.

But all eyes were on the lady in white. Here’s Emily loitering with intent outside The Normans Ceremony Barn. Her simple, sleek and oh-so-stunning dress was designed Emma Beaumont, who's studio is based in Cheshire. “I knew I wanted something minimalist but with some ‘bridally’ touches,” explains Emily. “And also something I could dance in and eat lots of chips! Emma and her whole team are so lovely and so talented.”

And here’s a closer look at Emily’s bouquet - a celebration of summer colour by Claire Lewis. As for the rest of the fantastic florals… “Most of the potted plants were raided from my dad's garden - he put in so much hard work growing them, he's such a hero!” says Emily. “The cut flowers were provided by Sally Pickering from Flowers from the Farm, so everything was from just down the road with zero air miles! Everything was arranged by Claire Lewis at who also provided all the props.”

We adore this shot of Emily and her girls - the colours, the composition… credit to photographer Jules Barron for capturing it- and everything else on the day. What a star!

“But what of the groom?!” we hear you cry. Don’t worry - here he is, hiding in the Cow Stalls contemplating love and life (and thinking of all the future social engagements he could wear his amazing jacket to. Note the floral pattern. We love it. Bravo to Manchester tailor Richard Smith.)

Luckily, we were able to extract James from the Cow Stalls and deposit him at the end of the aisle, before Emily and her Dad, made their entrance into the Ceremony Barn…

And below is a photo that gets us every time: happiness personified!

It doesn’t matter how many ceremonies we host here at The Normans, we can never quite get over how beautiful the Barn looks when it’s full of guests, the bride and groom, and lots of love.

Vows were exchanged, and James and Emily returned down the aisle as man and wife. Behold the joyous throwing of confetti - once again captured on camera by Jules Barron, perched on the Ceremony Barn’s mezzanine level.

And… more confetti!

Once the petal pelting had finished, James and Emily arrived in The Courtyard amid much fanfare - said fanfare provided by the scallywags of New York Brass Band.

NYBB have since performed at Glastonbury. We haven’t heard from them since, but assume/hope they’re alive and still taking bookings.

Hog & Apple were on hand to provide sustenance - food being a very important part of Emily’s day…

“We picked food that would keep things casual,” says Emily. “I really loved Hog & Apple’s sharing boards. We were both big fans of the taco canapes - and it’s a running joke that we only ever eat kebabs, so obviously had to have shawarmas for the evening food, which were a big hit!”

The weather turned, and while bruised, brooding skies weren’t enough to dampen spirits (the rain held off, happily), they did encourage guests to move inside…

… where long rustic banqueting tables awaited, lined with pot plants (straight out of Emily’s Dad’s garden!), shining glassware and contemporary tableware.

Wedding favours? Sorted. Old-school Panini football stickers, of course.

“I was very sceptical at first,” explains Emily, “but James's vintage football sticker collection is infamous amongst friends, and people seemed to really enjoy them!”

For all the pomp and ceremony of weddings, we love the quiet moments - here are James and Emily, away from the madding crowd, enjoying a minute together before being welcomed in for the wedding breakfast…

But James and Emily weren’t ones to stay away from the fray, and were soon back in action by way of a full-blooded first dance…

“We knew the Normans was the place for us the moment we walked in. Everything from the beautiful ceremony barn to the secret little seating areas is perfect. Not only is the venue beautiful but the team are fantastic - everything leading up to the wedding was handled so smoothly and really put us ease, and Oliver was amazing on the day helping with anything and everything!”

Cosmopolitan cool at The Normans

London-based couple Jaimie and Jez knew exactly how to bring the best out of The Normans. Their vision riffed on the venue’s rustic features, and took advantage of its more contemporary elements.

The result?

A wedding that not only looked great, but was imbued with enough heartfelt personal touches to make us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

With so many amazing photos from the day (thank you, Laura Calderwood!), it was difficult to know where to begin this blog. But, after a prolonged bout of choice anxiety, we plumped with this shot of bride Jaimie stepping out of a classic 1954 Bentley R-Type E (aka The Yorkshire Wedding Car), dazzling all and sundry in her Maggie Sottero dress and sheer Justin Alexander jacket from Abigail's Bridal Boutique, Leeds.

Just. Wow.

“I fell in love with the champagne dress, which was actually a slip dress from underneath of a completely different dress!” explains Jaimie. “I tried a few jackets, but was instantly drawn towards the mandarin collar. I liked having a combination that felt unique - and to be able to take the jacket off on the night and have a second look without having to buy a second dress!”

Jaimie embellished her jaw-dropping look with something blue(ish) - a pair of Alexandre Birman shoes.

Bravo, Jaimie. Bravo.

Jaimie’s bridesmaids were dressed in Maids to Measure dresses - shout out to Claire at The White Yard. The lovely trio’s look was finished off with bouquets by Kate Mell.

Groom Jez, no slouch in the style department himself, kept up appearances with a tailor-made suit from Rhodes Wood of Harrogate, who he couldn’t recommend more. His supporting cast of groomsmen were decked out in suits from Slaters Menswear.

As is true of his bride, Jez has an eye for detail, and sartorially minded gentlemen will doubtless appreciate this watch-cuff link combo.

The cuff links belong to the groom’s father, while the Blancpain Villeret Quantieme Perpetual timepiece is a family heirloom once belonging to Jez’s grandfather and now his uncle. “When I told him I was wearing it for the wedding, he laughed,” says Jez. “He joked: ‘You’ve had your eyes on it for sometime!’”

We don’t blame him.

And, below, a closer look at some of the floral embellishments of the day: the individually designed buttonholes and the flower girl’s gorgeous ‘wand’ and floral crown, all the handiwork of Kate Mell.

The weather, happily, received the memo re. Jaimie & Jez’s picture-perfect day, meaning that guests could take full advantage of the sunshine in The Normans Courtyard.

Once all their guests had congregated in The Courtyard, Jaimie and Jez rolled into The Normans. We love how the regal Bentley falls in line with the couple’s colour scheme. No accident, that.

And here are the couple, making their entrance into The Normans Courtyard, accompanied by a soundtrack of raucous applause…

… and the sweet warbling of the fantastic Wandering Hands.

Guests’ thirst was quenched at the ‘spruce your juice' station, and appetites were sated with some truly original (and oh-so-tasty) canapes.

“Our guests are still talking about the chicken katsu baozi buns and the ‘Big Mac’ sauce spring rolls,”  says Jaimie of the Hog & Apple’s culinary creations.

Meanwhile, we couldn’t help but admire the bride’s commitment to the cause: the card box, a miniature Ikea greenhouse, was painted gold by her own fair hand.

And, since Jaimie and Jez married in a church, rather than onsite, The Normans Ceremony Barn made for the perfect backdrop for the obligatory group photo.

We love this shot of The Normans Grain Shed, lined with our rustic banqueting tables - the gantries adorned with olive leaves and dangling tealights. In fact, the gantries bear special significance to this wedding, since they were conceived soon after chatting through ideas when Jez and Jaimie visited the venue last year.

“We remember showing images on our Pinterest board as a bit of a pipe dream but the reality was even better!” says Jaimie.

We’re also big fans of Jaimie and Jez’s table plan - a simple yet striking guide for guests to find their seat…

… and then, the little touches… such as the place settings…

… which were quickly filled by sumptuous sharing platters for that informal feel.

As guests made merry, Jez and Jaimie escaped to the hidden corners of The Normans for a moment’s peace (not to mention some fantastic photo opportunities).

And so, to the first dance. (Note Jaimie’s subtle outfit change - a perfect look to kick start the evening’s revelries.)

Admittedly, the some of the dancing that followed wasn’t quite up to the standard of Jaimie and Jez’s graceful display - but it was nonetheless fun to watch…

Too fun for some, it would seem…

A blossoming romance at The Normans

Romance doesn’t get much more blossomy than an actual real-life wedding - which is exactly what happened here at The Normans (no surprises there).

Krista and Dan couldn’t have picked a better day for their Easter wedding. The sun was shining, the skies were brilliant blue, and the flora and fauna was in full bloom - inside and out…

Dan and his groomsmen fully embraced the weather - donning shades and sharp-fitting navy suits from the ever-reliable Moss Bros.

Blue was a reoccurring theme of the day. Krista’s girl squad were her ‘something blue’ - all dressed in effortlessly elegant powder-blue dresses from online retailer ASOS.

Krista, the undisputed star of the show (sorry, Dan), wore a bespoke gown from Brides of York.

“I loved the off-shoulder style and thought the floaty skirt was perfect for my Spring wedding,” says Krista. “My favourite thing about the dress was the white lace. I also wore a sheer long length veil which complimented the lace.”

We couldn’t agree more.

“We wanted the colours to be romantic,” continues Krista. “Soft dusty blue paired with more of an organic white and green for our rustic wedding.”

The combination of white roses, blue hydrangeas, and forest-green eucalyptus of the bouquet were exquisite. We tip our caps to florist Miss Elle’s for these botanic beauties.

Since we can’t quite get enough of that veil - here’s another gratuitous shot of Krista walking to the Ceremony Barn via the farmhouse courtyard.

Needless to say Krista owned the aisle. We love this shot of her and her dad, framed by fantastic blossom trees from Ambience Venue Styling - set against the fairylight backdrop of our Ceremony Barn, it’s a look that’s hard to beat.

And so, as is the custom in these parts, Krista and Dan were married, confetti was thrown, and the couple stepped out into the sun.

Drinks somehow taste better in the sunshine, so it was a joy to see guests enjoying a tipple or two in The Normans Courtyard.

And no one was more pleased to indulge in some al fresco merriment than Poppy - Krista and Dan’s adorable chocolate lab. We loved Poppy’s collar, crafted by Krista as one of the (non-drink-related) activities on her hen - check out Crafty Hen.

And here she is again - meeting and greeting guests (and sniffing out canapes).

Meanwhile, not content with the stunning blossom trees in the Ceremony Barn, Krista and Dan found the real thing just outside the venue.

And they even managed a bit of quiet time with Poppy in our Cow Stalls…

Once guests had had their fill of drinks and canapes, the Grain Shed doors were flung open to reveal this quite unique table plan, crafted by the bride herself.

Dinner was served under the Grain Shed’s sparkling canopy by caterers F4D, who delighted guests with a ‘host your own roast’ main course. Think: glazed leg of pork, mustard mash, sage and onion roast potatoes, glazed carrots, curly kale and thick pan gravy. Dessert? Everyone’s favourite: sticky toffee pudding.

After the wedding breakfast, and before the party kicked off in earnest, guests returned outside to bask in the evening light.

(Shout out, also, to Krista’s Granddad, who fashioned the welcome sign, below.)

And, as guests, made merry in The Courtyard, Krista and Dan escaped to watch the April sun dip below the horizon, capping off an Easter Sunday to remember.

“The most amazing wedding venue we could have wished for. Absolutely perfect in every way - the candle-lit barn, the cosy cowsheds... the pretty courtyard, which was perfect to sit in the sunshine for our Easter Sunday wedding! We loved it. Our guests loved it. And the best part.: having our chocolate Labrador there with us for the whole day!
